While I think the plebiscite was an abomination and was deliberately set up to fail by opponents of marriage equality, the fact that participation was so high and the result was so overwhelming gives the lie to your retrospective analysis. Just as with the issue the OP is trying to inflame, most "normal" people, on reasonable reflection, will opt to leave others alone and accept, if not respect, their personal choices. If that means we need to explain delicate things to kids and older conservatives, that's OK too.
