Hi Everyone,
Long time, first time here.
It's very intriguing to read the back and forth.. In particular the 'panic' of those so strongly opposed to MCB.
Let me open by saying that I don't consider myself 'woke;, but I am a long-practicing mechanical engineer who is actually excited about the opportunities that new energy tech can bring to us as SH.
A few of my own points/views for what they're worth are below:
- Renewable energy can be a great investment with long term benefits to all SH
- South Australia is an example of a region where power prices actually went in to the negative on a few occasions due to (mainly) solar generation in summer time, so the whole 'renewables will increase power bills' is a bit of a farce.
- Green energy is 'peaky'; battery storage is the key to even this out. Lithium is not the answer for grid storage; it is expensive and there has already been a fair few instances of major failures and fires. Bromine Flow, Vanadium flow and many other emerging technologies are proving to be safe, stable and long lasting alternatives to Lithium.
- "Australia is hardly a major contributor to global carbon emissions'. - Well actually, if you look at it per capita, we certainly do hold a few records..
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/nov/12/australia-shown-to-have-highest-greenhouse-gas-emissions-from-coal-in-world-on-per-capita-basis
- The point for me though isn't so much that 'Straya = bad', it's more about our opportunities to lead future tech.
- 'Solar panels aren't effective in the (!!) SNOW!' This is certainly the most risky thing we'd need to consider in our country.. Definitely snows in most areas here
- Coal plants are ageing equipment and their operators (certainly including AGL) are not maintaining them properly. A major contributor to the spike in east coast power prices is the amount of coal generator breakdowns that have occurred in the past year or so. Where are the spare parts?? We have a generator that will be out of action until September at the earliest (costing us many millions in lost revenue) and yet there is little noise about this in comparison to MCB??
- The AGL board has proven over recent years that they have no strategy; the demerger was flawed from the beginning and would not have returned the value to SH that they were claiming.
- 'The vote against demerger was by a woke minority and didn't represent the majority of shareholders' - Well, I watched with interest yesterday, looking for a major slide in the SP to reflect this theory. Why didn't this happen? Perhaps because most are either happy (or indifferent) about the outcome?
- For some of the boomers in this thread that throw the word 'woke' around like you know what it actually means, I'll leave Dr. Google's definition of it here for you below:What is woke slang for?Woke (/ˈwoʊk/ WOHK) is an English adjective meaning "alert to racial prejudice and discrimination" that originated in African-American Vernacular English (AAVE).
So I say RELAX... Kick back, be excited (not scared) about the future of AGL as we take this old girl into the modern age and reap the benefits!
