I think Margin Loans are great - but I probably use them differently from most people. My Loan is just $100k and the stocks backing it are over twice that, but the loan itself is often under $10k. The excess can be used for a host of things, it is effectively a "line of credit" and I only pay interest on the actual loan as it stands at any time.
This line of credit is very useful for paying capital gains tax, buying something that is suddenly looking very cheap (eg, when I read a good announcement very early) and anything that requires a bit of ready cash. When I boost the loan to near the top it can take a while to pay it down again, but I try to do that within a few months.
