Confirms what I suspected, the industry self managed fund option is sub par compared to actual SMSF since they take out the tax despite never actually triggering it. However you’re right, most people cannot manage the paperwork etc or be bothered, which is a personal choice. But it does hit performance. Ie $50k on $1m is a 5% difference in total retirement balance in a SMSF vs industry platform.

I use Esuperfund which is an online accounting, audit and tax platform. It’s so simplistic and all linked to your CommSec account/bank accounts. Annual compliance takes no more than an hour or so. They store everything electronically and have documents for you to sign via the platform etc. very very cheap and lower cost than any industry fund. And of course BHP and RIO are our largest holdings

$1000pa. Most industry funds will charge you 0.30% or so once you add direct fees and administration, so if your balance is over a few hundred thousand the platform I use is cheaper then the added bonus of tax benefits.
