Thanks Mistyrain (and others) that's very helpful. I guess there is then the strategy of deciding which sells to put against which buys in case the trade was over a year in duration and so won't attract tax (for this financial year more than last). That area of the law seems quite sketchy as well as I would argue I am not a day trader by profession and the tax ruling doesn't seem definitive on what this constitutes.
