I guess its just a personal opinion, but I don't think the Aussie economy is run any better than ABC Child Cares :)
And regarding the housing - The shortage, etc is more fudge to ensure that the bubble continues.
Why not spend the stimulous money on 1,000,000+ new houses...? Loads of material, labour, etc generated from that... Would also make our economy more sustainable.
"No... No... No..." Says government... "We need the bubble!"
