Putin was very pro-west, relative to former USSR leaders, in the infancy of his leadership. We failed to capitalise on this, I believe, in finding the right equilibrium.
It is what is, and it is easy in hindsight to look back. However as it stands with this current issue, I still believe that there was a way forward where Russia could have been brought into the West, with a longer term intention of focusing on other real threats to Western Universalism.
