The relevance is that 1971 and prior, the gold price was fixed by the Govt, From memory approx USD$32/oz. When they eventually removed that artificially set price, which they had to do when they changed the gold backing for the USD, the price went up very very quickly. Eventually pog was determined by the market. That took quite a few years and is no longer the case now.
