When I held FMG, years ago, the share price was being "played" similarly to what PLS and many others are today. FMG announced a $500m flexible share buy back. They appointed professionals to administer same. It's purpose was, in my words, to come to the aid of the share price when it was being subjected to the games that they play. In my opinion it worked brilliantly. Nothing like $500m was required to achieve the desired result and the arrangement was continued in later years. The share price stopped being smashed and the shareholders slept a lot sounder knowing the cavalry were available if needed.
