It's not a level playing field. And we actually don't need shorting at all. I don't agree shorting adds liquidity to the market. It adds volatility. And that's not a good thing. Many a paper has been written now. This view shorting adds value to a market has been proven wrong countless times. We don't need shorters to drive a share price down. The lack of demand would do that.

We don't have people out there shorting the price of bread down to lower the prices. We have competition doing that. And pretty much all ASX companies bar a few are in competitive environments which drives competition for ownership in their company or not.

The lack of regulation and accountability from MD and directors; their ability to buy directors insurance that covers illegal actions and failure to disclose; this needs to be removed so Director do not have a get out of jail free card with director insurance paid for by shareholders.

The issue is shorters do their research, they find out the directors have been lying to the market. And the spectaculat wins the shorters have is often because directors of the company have lied to the market. Shorters have unpicked that with their resources and experience and many a time have been right. If directors weren't allowed to do this they wouldn't be right so often.

And I also think shorters shouldn't be able to short to drive a share price down and out of an index that should be completely illegal. Perhaps some kind of regulation to prevent the bottom X amount of any index from shorting would work? If those companies are already at the bottom of the index you don't need shorters piling in; that just creates an imbalance market for those stocks.

Agree 100%. My position is that if folks want a leveraged play on future share price moves, up or down, that’s what a futures market is for.
