Gender identity is what gender you feel like, despite your biological sex.

Here's an example. You know how you can drink a glass of water, then eat some salted peanuts, then feel thirsty, even though biologically you are well hydrated because you just drank a glass of water?

Those feelings of thirst exist and are real, despite the fact you are well hydrated.

Here's another example: you can watch a good movie, and feel angry at the villain, even though it's just an actor playing a part and reading a script and not real?

A good movie can make you feel real emotions, even though nothing depicted ever really happened.

Humans minds are complex and can feel things that aren't necessarily related to physical reality.

Gender identity is the way a person feels, even though their physical body is something else. People's emotions are real.
