IMO the reason is because they (Sayona) want to use a more environmentally friendly approach to the process, which means re-vamping a bit. Sayona could have made samples to send to Novonix either on site with the existing equipment or sent some spodumene to a local lab to make hydroxide, however they did neither, instead they sent spodumene all the way back to Australia to be processes into hydroxide and then sent the hydroxide back to Canada to be tested. Why?

Here is the answer. The process improves the environmental footprint by recycling almost all of the chemicals involved using a closed loop system, it can easily be converted to hydroxide and is at least $1000/t cheaper to process. (2015 so likely much more).
Also it paves the way to build LARGER refineries that will be needed.
