Not sure if you're interested in this, just a quick summary really. Following the index rebalancing, we know that the shorts that were added this year were essentially closed for practically zero profit. For the sake of brevity, I've assumed the short is one trader and mathematical genius is not required.
The 50m share short added throughout 2021 I've measured were done at $2.41 on average, against VWAP for 2021 at $2.24. Without knowing the exact short transactions, we can be reasonably certain that the PnL for the remaining short position in the market is being measured against this area.
NOTE* The orange line running throughout the chart is running VWAP anchored at the beginning of the year, hence the step change at year end.
