the way I see it - it’s always a level playing field. If a stock gets shorted then that’s your opportunity to buy more at a lower price especially if you believe in the long term value. I find it hard to accept the argument that shorting is counter-productive. It actually works both ways. If a stock goes down you win because it means you can get more shares at a lower price. If it goes up you win too because your investment is making a return.
I think you need to be a glass half full kind of person if you don’t mind the shorting AND believe in the long term value of the company. It’s really that simple.
