After WW 1 and WW 2 plenty of drugs were available in the USA. Amphetamines were widely used by the USAF and to some extent by the Navy and Army as well. Many servicemen returned home addicts. Opiates had always been readily available. I think cocaine and crack became popular later. Vietnam (and perhaps earlier Korea) had certain American agencies introducing LSD, PCP, and STP.
