Having read this thread and being son of immigrants (parents migrated in 50s), the logical comments made relate to having a referendum on immigration and finding the "right" level of immigrants allowed per annum.
I find some of the comments being made in this thread (I think the year is now 2010) to be appalling.
The benefits this country achieved via immigration through the 50s and 60s was enormous. In that era, hard working people entered the country willing to do anything to improve thir lives.
To those commenting about not wanting to share the riches of this country, am surprised that you are on a share trading thread, as I believe there is an abundance of untapped wealth in Australia, certainly enough to go around.
This is definitely an emotional issue. But I remember a program I saw on SBS that showed a "digger" in the 50s complaining about the "New Australians" taking all their jobs. The point is he would never have "stooped that low" to do the jobs they did. 50 years later I see these parallels in many of the comments made here. Shame on you who espoused similar views!!!
Lets expend our energy and intelligence on influencing our heads of government to come up with policy that will benefit all
