Current Energex rules do not allow me to install a Redflow (or Tesla Powewall) battery. I contacted the minister's office, who passed it on to the energy ombudsman (or something like that) who raised it with Energex, who basically said "rules are rules and we've no interest in changing them".

I could do it if I upgraded my supply from single phase to three phase (which I have no need to do), but my electrician reckoned it would probably cost $15k, and even more if Energex decided to slug me for a new or upgraded inverter on the nearest local pole. And even then I would have no need to use the other two phases so it would make no difference to the distribution network. Installing a battery would of course only reduce the amount of power exported to the grid during the day (to charge batteries) and reduce the amount of energy imported from the grid during the evening peak by using power from the batteries instead, but they seem to assume that the battery will be exporting energy during the day and importing from the grid in the evening.

    Bureaucracy. . .
