Japan’s industry minister has asked Australia to increase its liquefied natural gas production as Tokyo tries to protect its energy supplies after Russia seized control of one of its major sources of LNG.
Koichi Hagiuda, Japan’s economy, trade and industry minister, began a five-day trip to Australia on Tuesday to attend an energy meeting of Quad group countries in Sydney hosted by Energy Minister Chris Bowen.
Speaking before leaving Tokyo, Mr Hagiuda said he would use the Quad meeting to ask Australia and America to increase LNG production amid anxiety in Tokyo about possible Russian disruption of its supply.
“It will have a significant meaning and lead to the improvement of our energy security,” Mr Hagiuda said of the meeting with his Australian, US and Indian counterparts.
