Most people baz expect the government to look after them but maybe they don't connect more interferance in their lives with that.
Just like they expect the government to interfere in other peoples lives if that other person is doing something, however trivial, that the first person does not like but then resent it if the same thing happens to them.

We live in a country gone crazy with over-government and regulations but the citizens have brought it all on themselves. Not every citizen but certainly a hell of a lot of us.
