    Quite absurd. Just think about what Barton said:

    "In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an Australian and assimilates himself to us."

    Who is meant by "us"? Already in 1907 there was a great variety of us both (very) Old Australians, second-generation Australians and (brand-) New Australians.

    "He (!) shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else."

    "Everyone else" So treated like the disenfranchised (in 1907) black Australians, for example?

    "Any man (!) who says he is an Australian, but something else also, isn't an Australian at all."

    Logically unsound. An Australian who is also an Anglican? Catholic? Atheist? Democrat? Conservative? French-born? Or, indeed, an English Royal?

    "We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language."

    Australian English?
