Hi all
This is just my thoughts (and I am heavily invested into Perth Basin gas. I am a greeny at heart. Our planet is bleeding and getting so much hotter). But as a nation we need a road map. I am invested in Perth Basin gas as it is so much cleaner than coal, Haber so much cleaner than imports. (therefore to my mind a relatively clean supply gap) With the current situation Labour could just say " no legislation" and let everything go on as the Liberals did, in my opinion without a path. (By the way legislation does not give a path to renewables by itself). SO if all of a sudden there was legislation stopping new coal mines and gas well:
- All state premiers would be up in arms,
- Labour would have major backlash from voters,
- Specifically for Strike we would have an argument that we were allowed to do exploratory wells, found gas then not allowed on a reasonable basis environmental approvals,
- So many other fossil fuel companies would be in the same boat as Strike,
- There would be serious energy shortages (including electricity in Aus) before very long,
- We would need to import fossil fuels such as gas,
- We would be totally reliant on imported Urea (with higher carbon foot print then what Haber is proposing)
Strike is a small player in this. What is needed is a pathway to renewables (to my opinion gas plays a major role in that). A pathway takes years to adjust to. Recently we saw an attempted take over of AGL, Twiggy Forrest is increasing renewables investment and in the last few days the farquhar family through a consortium have launched a takeover bid for renewable company Genex. Change is coming, but surely:
- gas is a transition to that change
- if feds legislated against new coal mines or gas wells companies like STX would have right to compensation
Any thoughts
