My assumption is that all this handling of data is done by the consumer device itself. All the chip does is to convert the digital signal that is fed to it into sound. The consumer device itself is responsible for turning whatever it receives into the digital audio signal that the speaker can play. In this respect, and only this respect, it is no different from an analog speaker.

The digital signal is only as true a representation of the sound as it was sampled by the microphone and the recording process. My assumption is that compression etc is part of the file storage process, and decompression etc is the job of the product manufacturers electronics. The AP device plays no part in any of this.

What the AP chip does is to remove the need to transform that digital signal into an analog signal (DtoA), and to divide it up into separate channels that would be sent to different cones that are optimised for different frequency ranges. This is a very cumbersome, specialised, and expensive process getting this all tuned to work well. Every part of that process is all redundant with AP.

From what I read there is a controller chip that orchestrates the chips through their ASICs, and that effectively manages the effective logical "size" of the speaker MEMS array depending on the number of chips available, so that the digital signal can best use the effective active surface area available to reproduce the sound to its highest fidelity. The more chips you have the better the acoustic range and the greater the sound volume range. This is giving us a device that can deliver the best, truest, and lowest cost music delivery of anything on the market for anything remotely near its price.
