Biggest issue is ICE fan-boys in media & social media. EV fires are highlighted with a certain glee.
Manufacturers are cautiously improving their tech, and for the most part with EV batteries each have their own special brews. However, like most batteries they are toxic and explosive.
Truth be known per - per 100,000 vehicles.
Hybrid vehicle fires top out at 3475.

But you won't hear much those stats, though those studies ignored reignition incidents, which for damaged EVs is a substantial risk. However, EVs so far have proven safer - but many ICE fires occur in aged vehicles, and are EV drivers the new Volvo hat drivers?
Bad press and judicious caution are a drag on radical EV batteries improvements. R&D is happening but behind the scenes - & incremental - & s.l..o...w....l.....y as each increment is repeatedly tested thousands of times.
What will be next announcement? I'm leaning towards the hand held tools or devices sector for short term commercialisation opportunities.
BB. I'm ICE vs EV agnostic - it what gets the job done the best at minimal real cost. But fast is fast.
