Without getting into the full background, it isn't as though Russia simply invaded a 'peaceful' neighbour out of the blue. But with regard to negotiations, that's what I am getting at with 'You made your bed...' You don't HAVE to negotiate, but it could end up being a costly gamble. If you care more for power than for your people, I guess it's an easy choice.
