Not exactly a hack. Extract the data via modulating the powersupply on an already compromised powersupply yes, but initiating a hack, no.

That required that malware was already installed onto the machine, and an audio monitor nearby.

So, for those of us who actually have a background in this area, let me reassure you that your concern on that powersupply hack is unwarranted.

Now that you are reassured on that point, lets really stress you out and point out the frightening reality of our entire highly-networked grid being more exposed to widespread issues due to poorly implemented firmware updates or network configuration mistakes that could cause nightmarish scenarios that would take weeks to recover from.

So - to recap - no one is hacking your home pc via the smart meter, (esp when they have your domestic grade router sitting their happily providing a gateway, and the government had data retention laws for every ISP!)
However, thanks to smart meters (along with a highly interconnected network-reliant grid) we have a massive and growing risk of catastrophic failure caused by a IT related bungle (or if you like feeling paranoid, hack).
