Could be all shite in the tailings as you say. But let's just say the old timers due to a few factors were not overly focused on clearing out all the Cryolite, let alone worry about other pesky things in the way of their 'white gold'. They certainly were not worried about or testing for REE for things like IPhones and F22s when the mine finally closed in the 80's
