"Do those sort of stories represent a threnody to the supposed 9 years of rule by the federal ALP gov't. Just how much money is in that taxpayers' purse? A pay rise for health care workers; a pay rise for pensioners; funding for several federal gov't initiatives; and on and on it goes."

Not sure of the sensibility of the questions here. All we see is just one piece of evidence that the state is failing - ie. the state of australia.

-Can't provide adequate emergency services -- so?
-same problem with ambulance ramping in other states
-WA refusing to provide power chargers on the Nullabor
    -Oz can't house people
    -Can't feed people
    -Can't provide medicines
    -Can't look after aged
-Hasn't got reliable power and will most probably end up with power rationing
    -can't provide workers
    -doesn't provide real education

there's a list of can't (s) and don't (s) a mile long for Australia now - the state is failing, it's that simple and Oz is well on the way to poverty paddock.
It it were 50 years ago, the slide could be arrested with guts and determination. That's not possible now because the race pace has quickened beyond belief - and, it's accelerating.
When major car companies won't put you on the customer list because your nation is not in the same league as other developed nations - that should be the red flag from hell, but, people just refused to see the sign - as they are refusing to see the buckload of signs now - Australia is the textbook 'fools paradise'
