Firstly Russia has always been part of Europe.
Secondly the EU has contemptuously dismissed Russia's past attempts to apply to be part of the EU.
Thirdly the current military conflict began in 2014 as a result of the EU refusing to enter into 3-way trade negotiations with Ukraine and Russia.
Fourthly NATO, after the end of the cold war, has refused Russia's requests to become a member of NATO.
