It's an attempt to get people to panic sell, and scare buyers away, IMO. An entity, probably one holding a large short position, is trying to confuse the market by preventing the SP from reflecting the progress that's been made.
339,310 shares were shorted on Friday, FWIW.
Edit: could be Van Eck dumping, but that would mean they hadn't lent their holdings to shorts, wouldn't it?
