Being ahead of Turnbull is not what is required, but rather making inroads into Labors popularity, particularly as most new leaders of a party enjoy a honeymoon period. The most recent major poll is 57.5% LABOR 42.5% COALITION.
The earlier published NEWSPOLL had Abbott at 27% for preferred PM compared to 55% for Rudd. It is therefore not unreasonable to construe that the massive change in direction by the Liberal Party has so far not been too successful. If Liberals are satisfied with their current poll results then they will be condemned to Opposition for a very long time.
