We have a preferential system of voting. Under that system over half the voting population had their vote allocated to Labor. As at the 2007 Rudd election win it was:

    Labor 52.7%
    Coalition 47.3%

The most recent poll(Morgan) has Labor at 57.5% and Coalition at 42.5%. The poll also showed a primary vote for Labor of 47% while the combined primary vote for the Liberals/Nationals was 37%. Further taking into account that most Greens voters would prefer Labor to Coalition when preferences are added to the primary it results in a big margin to Labor.

Pretty self explanatory. Easy to understand factual information.
