We all have different financial obligations and objectives but IMO, the SMSF route was a no brainer. I rolled over every cent from industry superfunds to my SMSF. Those funds were put to work and realised far bigger gains inside my SMSF. Not even close. Learning to invest and choice of where is the biggest factor here.

Tax. Only 15% of CG if held less than 12 months. 10% if CG realised after holding for >12 months. Paying 45% outside of super for me was/ is just crazy.

Pension phase 0% tax.

I'm just shy of 59 and started my SMSF at 32. No regrets about putting money aside way back for what it gives me now. I can start lump sum withdrawals from 59 (I won't be) and start my 0% Pension from 60 and for my better half also.

I do have assets outside of super but as time goes on, I don't see the point. Holiday house somewhere, maybe. I don't have an upper limit to how much pension I pay in one year (when I start pension phase) so if there is a large toy or capital expense required, I can just pull a large lump sum out. Just cannot get it back in as I have above the pension limit. Accumulation funds in excess of the pension cap is where I pull lump sum funds from if required.

These murmurs of super being raided by government have been around for years but to date, there has been no action. I just cannot fathom that they can force SMSF trustee's to invest where the government wants them to. That is just not going to happen IMO. Industry and retail funds, maybe but what is the backlash of that. Bad returns? Maybe pensions above a certain amount will be taxed a modest amount (10%) in the future. Wouldn't put that past them. That is LNP or ALP.

PC, Congrats on such a great investment at such a young age. Many of us it took a lot longer to spot one.
