Putin clearly attempted to invade the capital Kyiv. He wasn't doing that as an academic exercise or even for fun, he was doing it to take over the entire nation.
Clearly Zelenskyy understands he's dealing with a sociopathic individual and as such he cannot be trusted at all.
Putin has territorial ambitions well beyond just Ukraine, this is something all nations in the EU understand, NATO finally gets it, and so does the UK and the US.
It's been enough to cause Germany and Sweden to do an about face on their defence policies.
