Putin is getting old and wants the glory of re-establishing the russian empire as his legacy . He's just claimed parts of Ukraine to be part of russia - this is and always has been a land grab by russia which is now fully proven in fact by the annexation . Further - not the first time - Crimea already taken earlier .
