ECT is still used, but not as much as before - still a bit controversial based on what I've read.
Nowadays, cognitive based therapy (CBT) is the usual starting point and is generally accepted as having very good results. CBT basically gets you to analyse your thoughts and feelings and then reframe them in a more positive way. There is a really good book on this by Sarah Edelman called "change your thinking". I read it and found it really useful for life generally, although I bought it due to help with a specific work related stress problem (immoral lying boss stress is probably more accurate).
Scientologists prefer to audit you and get the big $$$ thus their opposition to it.
