Am not a geo, so only layman terms but I think its a tough process to define each mineral once oxidised kepingitril so the geo's use a total.

Think of Fe (iron) vs Fe2O3 (iron oxide or rust), easy to pick up a lump of iron ore, harder to pick up rust, probably the same with the list at the bottom of my post...

Take some refining to get a percentage of each rare earth mineral, they sometime separate into light and heavy rare earths, ie LREO and HREO but when you look at all the minerals involved a total is an easier way for comparisons take..

TREO (Total Rare Earth Oxide) = La2O3 + Ce2O3 + Pr2O3 + Nd2O3 + Sm2O3 + Eu2O3 + Gd2O3 + Tb2O3 + Dy2O3 + Ho2O3 + Er2O3 + Tm2O3 + Yb2O3 + Y2O3 + Lu2O3.
