Europe was both its largest and its closest market.
China was already buying Russian gas, and given the dire state of China's economy there's little scope to increase it further from here. Where is Russia going to find a new Europe-sized market?

As a footnote, Russia has also caused Europe to turbocharge investment not just in alternative supplies of gas, but alternatives to gas, especially hydrogen. IMO the hydrogen market will be going exponential over the next few years.
