What sort of upbringing causes people to beat up a man in a wheelchair?

As an aside, Mount Druitt is not the sort of place you want to go as a tourist...

    Story follows

Police say a Canadian man has been stomped on and bashed with metal bars in an unprovoked attack at a train station in Sydney's west.

It is alleged that two teenage boys confronted the 35-year-old man as he sat in his wheelchair on the platform of Mount Druitt station at about 11:00pm (AEDT) last night.

Feeling threatened, the man wheeled himself away to the lift but the boys followed.

Chief Inspector Wayne McMahon says they insulted him before attacking him.

"[A] punch to the head which has knocked him clean out of his wheelchair," he said.

"Whereupon they've then started to stomp on his body whilst he's covering up in the lift well."

Inspector McMahon says they broke a metal pole off the victim's wheelchair and bashed him with it.

Police arrived and chased two suspects. They arrested one, a 17-year-old, who is being questioned at Mt Druitt Police Station.

The second suspect got away, but police are confident CCTV footage will lead to his arrest.

The Canadian man is expected to have surgery today for severe cuts on his head and a depression on his skull.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
