About the drilling, The idea is to intersect both the structure hosting the anomaly and the anomaly itself. This way we may get clues as to what formed the anomaly in the first place. Typically we might have had fluids carrying dissolved minerals along a fault sometime in the distant past. The fluids react with sedimentary layers such as limestone. Drilling from the edge of the anomaly gives a better chance of intersecting the structure, the sediments and the mineralisation. Hopefully this allows the geos to model the shape and size of the mineralisation and to better target followup drilling.

Going straight down will provide the shortest distance to basement and for deep holes this will be the overriding consideration. Shallower exploratory drilling is much more likely to be at an angle chosen to intercept sedimentary layers, structure and the target anomaly.
