Russia has suffered a devastating loss of prestige. As the Russian identity is now closely associated with the personage of Vladimir Putin, this enormous loss of prestige is most greatly suffered by him. He is now vastly diminished in the eyes of all. I can’t see any way back for him because Russia has certainly lost its war in Ukraine.

A war is lost when a nation can no longer achieve its war aims. Russia cannot now subjugate all of Ukraine. Russia cannot now humiliate the US and the collective West. Russia cannot now awe and cow the rest of the world with its military might. Russia cannot now be taken seriously as a global superpower. Any land and resources that Russia may end up with as a result of its military adventures in Ukraine will not offset the devastating economic impacts caused by the loss of its export markets in Europe.

With the loss of Kherson city, the war has reached a tipping point. Ukraine has demonstrated yet again that it can win back its territory if supported. This is the most important victory because it has shown that Ukraine can methodically grind out an outstanding result over time and following a patient and sound strategic plan. The boost Ukraines victories have given to the Western alliance is the reality that all the support has been vindicated by the results achieved. Russia will not be able to stem the tide of support because they have not shown they can render it ineffective and redundant. This is just another reason why the war is irretrievably lost by Russia at this point.

How much longer the war has to run is unknown. For Ukraine, the periods of most danger were February / March and July / August. They have come through the greatest danger and cannot lose the war from here. The independent sovereign state of Ukraine exists and will go on existing.
