The ANFsays a total of 1,516 beds were closed, affecting the state's surgical, intensive care and paediatric wards.

ANF secretary Lisa Fitzpatricksays the Government is more interested in saving dollars than lives.

"Even at Christmas, therehas never been up to 1,500 beds closed in the past and that's been confirmed bygovernment data," she said.

"The closures are abouthospitals trying to save money, I believe, to ensure that they don't run out ofmoney in April."

BUDGET cuts will close 45 to 50 beds at Eastern Health, whichincludes the Box Hill and Maroondah hospitals, however it is unclear how manyjobs could go as a result.

Eastern Health operates 1300 hospital beds in Melbourne's east andincludes Angliss Hospital and the Healesville and District Hospital.

The new cuts follow the closureof a 32-bed surgical ward at Box Hill Hospital just over a year ago due to alack of funding for its services at the time.

However, it also coincides with the state government slashing $616million from its last two health budgets.

Ms Yeoh has estimated the funding debacle could close a total ofabout 440 beds

Revelations of Eastern Health's plans bring it to a total of 215bed closures.
