The lazy, or intellectually handicaped teachers need to be weeded out of the system. The trouble is the ancillary benefits available to teachers, eg early retirement on substantive benefits, lack of scrutiny, extensive holiday periods etc., ensure that very few teachers are going to retire early on a voluntary basis.
This change in attitude will be of substantive benefits to those teachers who carry out their duties with care and intelligence, as this will be recognised by the wider community. I perceive that the lack of accountabilty (which Gillard wants to change)is the prime cause of the malaise in the teaching profession.
