DrD...agree that Methanex would value a methanol site with close proximity to Asian customers and economics Vs doldrums 2002/3 are likely much more attractive.
Marathon has me intrigued as MGN CEO had longterm history there before parachuting into minnow MGN as CEO. Marathon has methanol traack record & has also been developing new methanol technology and have expressed an interest in gaining prescence in Asia Pacific.
MGN (and sto) retain interests in Amadeus gas that from this year will be uncontracted. A Darwin plant would provide a home for this medium term; and longerterm it may be feasible to extend pipeline to link the Cooper Basin (both high co2 & STO's large shalegas contingent resource.
In summary...a methanol plant is on the drawing board. It could be methanex; or Marathon; or neither. Either way MGN is responding to discussions with the mysterious major party, and therefore its actions are v. interesting.
    Cheers
