I think if it were a completely greenfield site, a new hydroxide plant would be a no brainer. But given SYA and PLL are fortunate enough that a partially built carbonate plant is on site, that changes the dial on the optimal path for downstream refining.

Patrick Brindle (PLL COO) mentioned that a number of options will be considered. E.g. whether NAL produces technical grade carbonate, which then gets refined into battery grade hydroxide at a separate facility, or whether NAL can produce battery grade carbonate, that doesn't require further refining (albeit may not be the optimal lithium chemical for North America).
