For a Nuclear plant to be able to be built here, Labor party would have to change their policy. That would require both state and federal sections. It has historically been a hot potato for them and they have resisted change to that policy. There would be a lot of politcal fallout for them, so I think it would take a lot of time for them to do so. Perhaps a year of debate within the party. This is a slow process and there would have to be some high profile people pushing it. This for the moment is clearly not happening. This is before any frame work has been put in legislation. I doubt very much that anything would have been built into the plans in this regard for the desal plant.

Although it might make sense to us for one, political parties don't tend to change their minds unless they sense the loss of plenty of votes.
