If you are with others, a really nice day trip is to catch the train up the Rhine Valley (the track follows the river) & stop off at a couple of the little villages beside the river that have vineyards all the way up the pretty steep hills. Fantastic homecooked food & great beer in dozens of little inns & picture postcard scenery (including old castles etc) all along the river. When you've had enough food, drink & scenery you can make your way back by river boat. Great day if there are a few degenerates with you.
We used to stay in a smaller town not far from Frankfurt, Mainz . . . . very nice & interesting war history
