PM's election pledge 'dead and buried': Dutton

Opposition leader Peter Dutton says the Prime Minister has broken his election promise to bring power bills down by $275, saying it is “dead and buried” with today’s price cap announcements.

Mr Dutton said it was a “significant broken promise” and Australian families and businesses would pay the price for the Albanese government’s “economic trainwreck”.

“They (Labor) have no idea what they’re doing. They float ideas everyday and they aren’t honouring the promises that they made at the last election,” he said.

“Power prices are going up and up under the Labor Party and Australian families… and small businesses who thought they were going to get relief from this government just are not.”

He said there was no evidence capping prices would be successful, instead the government needed to “drive more supply, more gas into the marketplace”.

In the same press conference, the Opposition Leader also slammed Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk for selling out Queenslanders as a political favour for the Prime Minister.

Mr Dutton then took a swing at federal energy minister Chris Bowen, saying it was unsurprising he was at the centre of the “dodgy scheme”, and dubbing him the “most hopeless minister” in the Rudd/Gillard period.

“I think we’re going to look back in 12 months' time realising that this was a catastrophic decision made by a very bad government,” Mr Dutton said.
