The only red flags here are the vague ramblings of the OP who has seen fit to give us this little whimsical story on their first post ever on HC. Its geographically impossible to be a "broken hill train guard" and have any experience with Leigh Creek coal, as the coal was railed on a dedicated standard gauge line from Leigh Creek to Port Augusta starting in 1956, all Leigh Creek coal post-1956 went to Port Augusta so you have a time and geography fail there instantly.

As mentioned, the office is currently only 2 days per week as most of the design staff would be located in Adelaide or elsewhere and this office will probably have longer opening hours once serious construction and increased on-site staff levels increase. For a town of that size 2 days a week is sufficient to keep the locals informed of any progress/developments in the project, especially as we now have this thing called the internet and email that you may have heard about.

You can't even smell anything at Copley let alone the new town of Leigh Creek, as the new town is at least 8km from the nearest part of the old Leigh Creek coal mine. In September the predominant wind is from the southwest and the town is located upwind/southwest of the mine so your wife is probably allergic to clean air, and/or some of the abundant native plants established around the town, or maybe someone was having a BBQ or refilling a gas bottle at the service station. Where do you and your wife live? Antarctica? If you live in Broken Hill you might want to get your backyard and gutters tested for lead, rather than worrying about trace amounts of gas from an old coal mine.

Thanks for saving us from ourselves though with your dubious unsubstantiated poorly constructed rumors....
