Just a bit background on what CSG is about. As a geotechnical engineer with research background, I know of some academics who are now doing extensive research on coal seam gas. What is really valuable between the coal seams is methane gas. As we know, methane gas is a combustible gas and is widely used as a form of energy. Recently, coalbed methane is classified as a renewable source of energy.

YES, RENEWABLE because of the on-going reaction of microorganisms in the coalbed which produces methane as a by-product. Extensive research is being carried out in Australia to increase the rate of methane recovery for commercial usage. These research works are being funded (in million dollars) by big mining companies in Australia. Coalbed methane will be the energy of the future and any place with such discovery will be highly sought after. Besides that, coalbed is being researched as a potential medium for CO2 sequestration. CO2 sequestration is where CO2 is being transported into a medium to be stored. Research is being performed in this area for environmental purposes. As mentioned earlier about the microorganism, research is being done to identify the microorganism which can survive in CO2 condition whilst producing methane.

These types of research are recently being popularised due to environmental concerns and in search for a renewable energy for the future. With such benefits from a coalbed, companies which are focussing in this area will be highly regarded.
