I am thinking along the line of RIO being the dark house just waiting when all the bidders shows their hands. This could be a smart move by SD in off loading some of the controlling holdings to keen investors indirectly telling RIO that it is game on.

The drill results are out and such a coincidence that he announces his resignation AFTER the exceptional results.

I have lost count of SD personal holding in KAH through his various vehicles. Doesn't he still have a 9% direct holding of KAH? I can bet that somewhere along he has a financial benefit in kick starting this bidding process.
